Halliday Functional Grammar

A man once said:

"Traditionally, grammar has always been a grammar of written language: and it has always been a product grammar. A process/product distinction is a relevant one for linguists because it corresponds to that between our experience of speech and our experience of writing: writing exists whereas speech happens."

Reflection Episode IV: Mini Research Proposal

For the third task, we have been assigned by Dr. Rozina to come out with a mini research proposal. This task is the last assignment for the semester, aside from the blog. We have been given the freedom to choose any topic as long as it is related to this course. So, we have decided to make a research proposal on the significance of MyAccess towards IIUM students’ grammar competency.
Steps in Research
While completing this task, we faced quite a number of challenges. This is because we need to find suitable software that can be used as the focus of our research, relevant existing journal articles for our literature review, deciding on which method we want to use and etcetera. Other than that, the software that we choose is not for free, it has to be purchased before we can use it. Because of this, we only have limited knowledge about this software and with that knowledge and our own creativity, we have to predict the response from the participants and we also need to come out with expected findings.

How Research Proposal submitted
The benefit from all these challenges is it really trained us to work efficiently as a group. As we all aware, the ability to work in a group is really crucial once we enter the working world because we cannot do everything on our own. Other than that, it also forced us to think critically in order to come out with relevant research questions and questions for the questionnaire. Again, this is also an important element that will play a major role once we enter the working life.
