At the end of the CALL lesson, we have been given a task by our ENGL
4740 instructor to design a CALL lesson plan. For this lesson plan, we
have deliberately chose grammar as our primary skill and the selected
group were the primary school students, specifically the standard 4
students. The time allocated for this lesson plan would be 1 hour which
was combined from the 2 period slots of 30 minutes. The topic that has
been picked by us was the basic English grammar; the parts of speech.
The main theme of this CALL lesson plan would be based on games and fun.
Why
do our group select grammar as our primary skill from the basic
language skills apart from the listening, speaking, reading, and
writing? This is mainly because 1) Grammar is fun and intriguing, 2)
Grammar is the very basic component of a language, 3) Nobody in our
class seems to pick grammar as primary skill. In our humble opinion,
grammar is interesting by itself because all other language skills can
be enhanced unconsciously by repetitive actions and practices, but
grammar requires an active mind where one have to learn its formula and
rules in order to understand, learn, and apply grammar effectively.
Without grammar, messages can be conveyed in a proper manner and one
might get misunderstood the message. Albeit without grammar, messages
still can be conveyed from one to another but a world with grammar makes
language is in an orderly and gracefully manner.
The
most challenging aspect that we have encounter while preparing the CALL
lesson plan is selecting and choosing the most suitable and best
applications for our lesson plan. With a handful of CALL applications to
be begin with, we have to be critical and thorough while testing each
applications. After days of grievous searching for the right
applications, we have found the right applications for our lesson plan.
These web-based applications were chosen because they are interactive,
fun, colourful but the most important aspect why we have picked them is
because it's full of knowledge that makes the learning process easy and
non-hassle. Since our target group consist of kids, we have decided to
go with games and fun element that might attract their interest in
grammar.
After the presentation, we have received
many comments and feedback for our lesson plan. One of the comments
given is regarding the time management. Since there will be many games
and videos to be shown and played, our introduction session have to be
cut down and omit the Power Point presentation. There are also many
positive feedback as well and after the presentation, we have learned
that creating a lesson plan can be such a chore. However, thanks to this
task, we have learn how to design and prepare a convenient lesson plan.
This task really benefits us as we have experienced in creating such
lesson plan and can helps us if we need to create another in the future.
